The wine-tasting event “Wines of Portugal – Taste and Feel” is part of an event series annually hosted in over 30 countries across the world. The event was held with the participation of more than 14 wine brands, from industry giants to small-scale ones, hailing from 7 regions of Portugal. “Wine of Portugal – Taste and Feel” was serving its mission of bridging the geographical gap between international wineries and hundreds of liquor stores in Vietnam.
Being an international wine-tasting event, the presence of a considerable number of interpreters was needed to ensure there was no hindrance in communication for all participants. To be specific, 14 interpreters and their expertise were enlisted.
What makes wine-tasting events unique is that wine connoisseurs will seldom swallow wine but instead spit it out the retain a fresh palate. Without prior briefing or good adaptability, interpreters may have inappropriate actions or reactions.
Event interpreting is a form of interpretation. Therefore, event interpreters are required to possess sufficient linguistic skills and language mastery to interpret information almost instantaneously.
In their role as interpreters, ensuring smooth communication between parties is not enough. Event interpreters are also tasked with taking over for the client in their absence. Particularly in the wine-tasting event, interpreters were also instructed in the proper art of wine pouring.
Through exhaustive interviews, our team was able to choose the best interpreters on the criteria of language proficiency and professionalism.
Afterward, to meet the event’s requirements, we conducted meetings with interpreters to brief them on matters such as attire, demeanor, and the nature of the event.
All the information pertaining to the project, reference materials, and interpreter profile was updated regularly on Thao & Co.’s proprietary platform. This allowed our clients to easily manage and track the project’s progress.
Before the event’s start day, linguistic experts at Thao & Co. began compiling a glossary of wine-related terms, a guideline of wine pouring techniques as well as the tools commonly found on the wine table based on previous researches of the event.
With extensive preparation on matters such as the industry terms glossary and interpretation guideline, Thao & Co.’s team of interpreters successfully blew through the interpreting event with ease, demonstrating professionalism and expertise.
After the project’s information was received, an interpreter with extensive experience was chosen to fill the role of the Lead Interpreter. The Lead Interpreter was the person responsible for overseeing the interpreting aspect of the event, ensuring that communication happened smoothly without a hitch.
This ensured that information was exchanged efficiently and professionally between relevant parties such as eventgoers, brand representatives, and hotel managers.
With the help of 14 experienced interpreters and thorough preparations, Thao & Co. succeeded in our role as the linguistic middlemen for the event “Wines of Portugal – Taste and Feel“.
