Table of Contents

Issued by Vietnamese competent authorities, a Vietnam visa is granted to foreign nationals for legal entry into the country. With so many different types of Vietnam visa available, it’s important to consider several key factors to ensure you choose the one that best suits your needs.

Types of Vietnam visas available for foreign nationals

Vietnam offers an extensive range of visa types, 27 to be specific, catering to different visitor groups and purposes. In particular, 6 of them are regularly sought after. They are:

Tourist visa (denoted as DL)

This visa is issued to foreign nationals for travel purposes, not for employment activities. The Vietnam tourist visa is further sub-categorized into four distinct types based on the number of entries and the length of stay:

  1. ● One month single-entry visa
  2. ● One month multiple-entry visa
  3. ● Three months single-entry visa
  4. ● Three month multiple-entry visa

Business visa (denoted as DN)

The visa, also known as the “commercial visa“, is recognized as one of the most popular visa types in Vietnam. It is further divided into two subcategories, including:

  1. DN1 visa – to be granted to foreign nationals working for organizations and businesses that have legal status under Vietnamese regulations.
  2. DN2 visa – to be granted to foreign nationals who engage in specific activities related to selling services, business establishments, or activities specified by international agreements to which Vietnam is a party.

Similar to tourist visas, business visas in Vietnam are also categorized based on the duration of the legal stay and the number of entries allowed. Here are the four subcategories of business visas:

  1. ● One month single-entry visa
  2. ● One month multiple-entry visa
  3. ● Three months single-entry visa
  4. ● Three months multiple-entry visa

Student visa (denoted as DH)

This visa is granted to foreign nationals who wish to stay in Vietnam for educational purposes or to participate in internships. It is valid for up to 1 year. If you meet the conditions set by the immigration department, you can renew this visa to continue staying in Vietnam legally.

Work visas (denoted as LD)

This type of visa is issued to foreign nationals for employment purposes. This visa is valid for a duration of 2 years and is further subdivided into two subcategories

  1. LD1 – to be granted to foreigners who come to work in Vietnam with a work permit exemption certificate, unless otherwise regulated by an international treaty to which Vietnam is a member.
  2. LD2 – to be granted to foreigners without work permit exemption.

Dependent visa (denoted as TT)

This is a type of visa that allows spouses and children of certain foreigners or spouses and children and parents of Vietnamese citizens to travel to Vietnam for visiting purposes. A Vietnam dependent visa is granted to:

  1. ● Spouses or children under 18 years of age of foreigners issued with LLV1, LV2, NN1, NN2, DH, PV1, LS, ĐT1, ĐT2, ĐT3, LĐ1, LĐ2 visas.
  2. ● Parents, spouses or children of Vietnamese citizens;

This visa is valid for various durations, including 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and up to 12 months. It is further divided into two subcategories, including single-entry visa and multiple-entry visa.

Vietnam electronic visa (EV Visa)

An electronic visa is issued online to foreigners by the Vietnamese Immigration Department. All foreign nationals are eligible for this type of visa. Electronic visas do not differentiate between entry purposes and allow for a maximum length of stay of 90 days, whether for single or multiple entries.

How to choose the right Vietnam visa?

To ensure a smooth visa application process and avoid any disruptions or denials, it’s crucial to determine the right visa option for your case. For example, if you’re planning on a vacation to Vietnam, you’ll need to apply for a tourist visa. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

  1. ● Purpose of entry
  2. ● Duration of stay
  3. ● Single or multiple entries

Then, meticulously prepare the necessary documents based on the requirements of the visa that matches your needs. Early preparation is the key to ensuring a smooth and hassle-free trip.

Also make sure to check if you are eligible for Vietnam visa exemption and prepare the required documents to be granted this privilege.

Important considerations

When preparing documents for a Vietnam visa, it’s important to note that foreign-issued documents require notary translations. Documents requiring translations include:

  1. ● Personal documents such as birth certificate, ID card, marriage certificate, and others.
  2. ● Financial proof, employment contract, letter of appointment, appointment decision, academic degree or diploma, and other documents.
  3. ● Your travel itinerary
  4. ● Document substantiating your schedule such as plane tickets and hotel booking receipt
